I'm afraid the simplest alternatives are either to use linux or to use Visual Studio. Microsoft is in it for profit, and they will do all they can to make sure that you have to use their product and now their code too (C#). That being said, I did experience a similar problem if I recall correctly so if I find the fix I used I will update this article with it. Getting paths to the compiler is easy enough but I still have problems when it comes to headers etc. e.g. "no include path in which to search for windows.h" I can add these paths manually in Eclipse but its a real hastle when creating a new project.
