This tutorial outlines pretty well how to do this, I’m just offering a bit of clarification (we had some trouble getting this to work).

• When it mentions ‘primscript’ there are actually two. One is the generic one linked on the site, this goes in your top-level prim (in this case, ‘ant maker’) as ‘primscript’. The other is the one the Maya script generates, it goes in the notecard (copy/paste) and it’s that notecard’s UUID you use when calling primscript. It doesn’t matter what you call the notecard as you are using its UUID and not its name.
• Be sure that ‘primscript’ in your top-level prim has its ‘Running’ box checked! If you can’t check it, then the script can’t compile, which means you copy/pasted incorrectly somehow.

Week before last we had another meeting about Second Life. I had a chance to talk about sculpties, a new feature Linden Labs has added. It is a method of importing your own 3d objects into the game, however in order to do that you have to bake a low-resolution UV texture from your work and then upload that to Second Life. In-game you apply it to an object and it takes on the shape you made. Since it’s low-res you have to break up the object you’re making into smaller parts if you want better detail, then assemble the pieces in-game. More parts == better detail == more polys. Anyway, I’m working on a Japanese lantern so I showed the top part to the group. We were in one of the training rooms, everyone had an Imac running WinXP Pro and was logged into the game and we had at least one person connected remotely. It was a very interesting experience being our first time where we were meeting irl and virtually simultaneously.

As you’ll note, even in NMSU’s community there are furries… -sigh-. One of my friends pointed out that with this and similarly outlandish avatars it may be hard to take a class seriously. A topic of discussion as we plan this out is whether or not we should force everyone into more business-like attire, at least in virtual classes.

NMSU bought an island in Second Life. This isn’t news, however I have become somewhat involved in the project. On the clock. With full permission.
